Course Duration: 3 months

Mode: Self paced for access anytime as per your convenience within three months of registration.

Course Objective

This course is designed to be a bridge course between medical statisticians and researchers in medical and health disciplines. This would impart the basic statistical knowledge to the participants so that they can correctly use some basic methods, and properly interpret their own and others’ results reported in the literature.

Course Offering

1. Self-paced for access anytime as per your convenience within three months after registration

2. Fully oriented to the needs of medical professionals and is in a non-mathematical language conducive to medical and allied researchers

3. Covers all basic biostatistics topics – provides both requisite knowledge and skills and equips you to understand basic biostatistical methods and to apply them for improved research and better publications

4. Has easy-to-understand videos and reading material separately for each session, supported by exercises for self-evaluation

5. Awards an official certificate from Max Healthcare after successful completion

Course Content

1. Study Designs with Special Reference to Clinical Trials

2. Descriptive Statistics

3. Medical Uncertainties and Medical Tests

4. Confidence Intervals

5. Statistical vs. Medical Significance

6. Relative Risk (RR) and Odds Ratio (OR)

7. Correlation and Regression

8. Some Statistical Tests

9. Introductory Survival Analysis

10. Sample Size for Medical Studies

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand the difference between observational studies and clinical trials

2. Design and conduct an appropriate clinical trial with randomization and blinding

3. Identify different types of data and how to collate them

4. Appreciate the importance of descriptive statistics, including the proportions and the variation, and how to interpret them

5. Calculate and correctly interpret the sensitivity, specificity, and differentiate them from positive/negative predictive value of a medical test

6. Determine and interpret ROC curves, find the best cut off of a quantitative test, and appreciate its correct meaning

7. Understand the meaning of the confidence intervals and calculate large-sample confidence intervals for means and proportions

8. Correctly interpret the P-values and statistical significance, and use them with discretion

9. Differentiate between statistical significance and medical significance

10. Understand the concept of statistical power and its importance in medical research

11. Calculate and correctly interpret relative risks and odds ratios, their confidence intervals and statistical significance

12. Understand the meaning and limitations of correlations and calculate simple linear regression by Excel

13. Understand where to use logistic and where ordinary regression, and the difference between unadjusted (gross) and adjusted (net) effect of various factors on an outcome

14. Where to use which statistical test (only the commonly used tests)

15. Perform the chi-square test for 2x2 table based on Excel and draw correct conclusions

16. Apply Student’s t-test to one- and two-sample (paired and unpaired) situations based on Excel and differentiate them from ANOVA tests, and draw conclusions

17. Appreciate the need for Tukey and Bonferroni tests

18. Understand basic survival analysis methods (censoring, Kaplan-Meier, and log-rank test) and draw appropriate conclusions

19. Understand the importance of sample size in obtaining precise results and in being able to detect a medically significant effect where one exists for different kinds of studies

20. Realize that different formulas are required for calculating sample size in different situations

Who Can Enroll

1. Medical/Dental/Pharmacy/Nursing/Nutrition researchers and PG students

2. Public health professionals and epidemiologists

3. Professionals interested in evidence-based medicine

4. Those interested in improving the quality of their data-based research

Evaluations and Grading

Evaluations will be based on an online assessment post course with atleast 50% marks.

Certification

Successful candidates will be awarded an offical certificate by Max Institute of Medical Education.
